MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS (R)
"Mary Queen of Scots" explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary
Stuart (Ronan). Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies
pressure to remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim
her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the
compelling Elizabeth I (Robbie). Each young Queen beholds her "sister" in
fear and fascination. Rivals in power and in love, and female regents in a
masculine world, the two must decide how to play the game of marriage versus
independence. Determined to rule as much more than a figurehead, Mary
asserts her claim to the throne.

THE MULE (R)
Earl Stone, a man in his 80s who is broke, alone, and facing foreclosure of
his business when he is offered a job that simply requires him to drive.
Easy enough, but, unbeknownst to Earl, he's just signed on as a drug courier
for a Mexican cartel. He does well -- so well, in fact, that his cargo
increases exponentially, and Earl is assigned a handler. But he isn't the
only one keeping tabs on Earl; the mysterious new drug mule has also hit the
radar of hard-charging DEA agent Colin Bates. And even as his money problems
become a thing of the past, Earl's past mistakes start to weigh heavily on
him, and it's uncertain if he'll have time to right those wrongs before law
enforcement, or the cartel's enforcers, catch up with him.

MARY POPPINS RETURNS (PG)
Directed and produced by Rob Marshall, "Mary Poppins Returns" also stars
Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer and Julie Walters with Colin
Firth and Meryl Streep. The film, which introduces three new Banks children,
played by Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and newcomer Joel Dawson, also
features Dick Van Dyke and Angela Lansbury. The film is set in 1930s
depression-era London (the time period of the original novels) and is drawn
from the wealth of material in PL Travers' additional seven books.

THE FAVOURITE (R)
Early 18th century. England is at war with the French. Nevertheless, duck
racing and pineapple eating are thriving. A frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman)
occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz)
governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne's ill health and
mercurial temper. When a new servant Abigail Masham (Emma Stone) arrives,
her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and
Abigail sees a chance at a return to her aristocratic roots. As the politics
of war become quite time consuming for Sarah, Abigail steps into the breach
to fill in as the Queen's companion.

An 8 week screening and discussion series of movies that portray all facets
of American life, at any time or any given era. You'll see some bona fide
masterpieces, and some that you've always meant to see, but never got around
to (or, some you've never heard of!) 
"AMERICANA" can be any genre; drama, comedy, adventure, musicals, epics. You
never know what you're going to get!!
Join fellow film buffs like yourself in this latest edition of this popular
series of the Avon Theater's 19 years of film classes!
Classes are always on THURSDAYS, and start THURSDAY, JANUARY 31st at 6:30 PM
(to around 9 PM) and end on THURSDAY, MARCH 21st.
