MARIGOLD2.jpg

THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (PG) Comedy (2 hr 2 min --not including 8 to 12 min of previews)
Now that The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is full up with its long-term residents, co-managers Muriel Donnelly (Maggie Smith) and Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel) have a dream of expansion, and they've found just the place: The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. With plans underway, Evelyn and Douglas (Judi Dench and Bill Nighy) venture into the Jaipur workforce, wondering where their regular breakfast dates will lead. Meanwhile, Norman and Carol (Ronald Pickup and Diana Hardcastle) navigate the swirling waters of an exclusive relationship, as Madge (Celia Imrie) juggles two very eligible suitors, and recent arrival Guy Chambers (Richard Gere) finds a muse in Sonny's mother, Mrs. Kapoor (Lillete Dubey) for his next novel. As his marriage to Sunaina (Tina Desai), the love of his life, quickly approaches, Sonny finds his plans for the new hotel making more claims on his time than he has available. Perhaps the only one who may know the answers is Muriel, the keeper of everyone's secrets. As the big day nears, family and guests alike find themselves swept up in the irresistible intoxication of an Indian wedding.
The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is about as original as its title -- but with a cast this talented and effortlessly charming, that hardly matters.

RANTS, RAVES & RAMBLINGS FROM THE HEAD HONCHO

It is truly hard to believe it was about this time of year in 1999 that I finally got a shot at re-opening the old Avon Theater…
I’d been involved in numerous fund-raisers for the Lincoln Square Theater in the mid-90’s, and grown increasingly frustrated at the lack of forward motion at that wonderful old venue.
I just knew there was still a future for a revitalized downtown, and I also knew at least one of the two remaining classic downtown theaters had to be a major part of it.

I kept looking at the outside of the long-closed Avon Theater, and it seemed to be telling me it wasn’t ready to be relegated to the scrapheap of yesteryear; it was saying to me it was ready for the next chapter!

In February of 1999 we started that chapter, and by March of that year, after a month of cleaning and painting and refurbishing done by volunteers, we were ready to open the doors in early April…

The rest, as they say, is history.

But, as they also say: It took a village!
So many people have been part of the Avon’s saga (a few of them still involved to this day!) that it is impossible for me to take any but a measure of credit for its rebirth.
My wife, Susan, and daughter, Melissa Rinchiuso, have been part of the Avon since day one, and our wonderful General Manager, Ashley Petty, has been with us for over 8 years (roughly half the time we’ve been open!).
Co-Manager, Hannah Elliott has been with us right about 8 years…and the long-time stellar staff list goes on and on.

We are often asked if there are any job openings, and we are frankly stunned to think of what a low employee turn-over the Avon has.

In fact, we haven’t had a staff position open up for over 2 years!!

Is this because we are such a joy to work for? I don’t think so.

It’s because we are very blessed to find staffers that share our vision.

They see, as YOU see, that the Avon is not just an almost-100 year old theater that is constantly showing its age.

They see a symbol of what the American spirit of “CAN DO” can achieve.

We aren’t slick, and we aren’t some big corporate hoo-hah.

We have problems with our facility all the time.
Many of our chairs are showing wear and tear, and sometimes it seems that something is going wrong almost every day…

But, it is worth the headache.

Now, 16 years later, we see a downtown filled with great restaurants and shops.

There is actually excitement in the air!

And, we’re just getting started.

In the final analysis, WHO is it we have most to thank for The Avon Theater’s second life as a Decatur landmark?

Who do we have the most gratitude for??

Go look in the mirror.

That’s who.

Thanks from all of us Avonians!
