the story of an actor (Michael Keaton) - famous for portraying an iconic
superhero - as he struggles to mount a Broadway play. In the days leading up
to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his
career, and himself. 

A thrilling leap forward for director Alejandro González Iñárritu, Birdman
is an ambitious technical showcase powered by a layered story and
outstanding performances from Michael Keaton and Edward Norton.

Maggie (McCarthy), a single mother, moves into a new home in Brooklyn with
her 12-year old son, Oliver (Lieberher). Forced to work long hours, she has
no choice but to leave Oliver in the care of their new neighbor, Vincent
(Murray), a retired curmudgeon with a penchant for alcohol and gambling. An
odd friendship soon blossoms between the improbable pair. Together with a
pregnant stripper named Daka (Watts), Vincent brings Oliver along on all the
stops that make up his daily routine - the race track, a strip club, and the
local dive bar. Vincent helps Oliver grow to become a man, while Oliver
begins to see in Vincent something that no one else is able to: a
misunderstood man with a good heart.

The Hunger Games 3: MOCKINGJAY (PT 1) (PG13)   Action/Adventure  (2 hr 3

The worldwide phenomenon of The Hunger Games continues to set the world on
fire with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1, which finds Katniss
Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) in District 13 after she literally shatters the
games forever. Under the leadership of President Coin (Julianne Moore) and
the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss spreads her wings as she fights
to save Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and a nation moved by her courage. The
Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 is directed by Francis Lawrence from a
screenplay by Danny Strong and Peter Craig and produced by Nina Jacobson's
Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. The novel on which the film
is based is the third in a trilogy written by Suzanne Collins that has over
65 million copies in print in the U.S. alone. 

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 sets up the franchise finale with a
penultimate chapter loaded with tension, solid performances, and smart
political subtext.

I think a word from me is needed this week on INTERSTELLAR


This is  a movie that is astounding in its ambition and scope!
Something of this sort has not been seen on American screens since the days
when Hollywood actually dared to make original films, and not cookie-cutter
retreads.

It will challenge you, and it will sometimes confound you


That cramp you feel in your brain is your gray matter actually THINKING at
the movies! (What a novel idea!)

HAVING SAID THAT:

Know that it is NOT for “everybody”.

It is NOT “Star Wars” or “Star Trek” or even “Gravity”


What it IS is a mind-bending blending of old fashion values coupled with
physics and Einsteins theory of relativity.

It is also not a movie with a brief running time!
While we’re not talking BEN-HUR or GONE WITH THE WIND or LAWRENCE OF
ARABIA-type length; this IS truly an “epic adventure”, and clocks in about
11 minutes short of 3 hours.

(You will need a BUCKET of popcorn, with a refill or two!)

Please understand: I’m not saying INTERSTELLAR is not a movie for dummies,
I’m saying to come to it expecting to NOT see the same ol’, same ol’.

(As so many of our customers say in the “greet out”---which is really an
“exit poll”---“Well, that was ‘different’!”

If we didn’t want to be ‘different’, we would never have re-opened the Avon,
and survived into our 16th year (so far).

 

‘Different’ defines the Avon, and sets us apart from the mediocre.
