TRANSFORMERS (PG13) I hadn't intended to play this movie. I was never into the whole Transformers thing back in the '80's, and was rather bemused that a new movie had surfaced after all this time...
BUT, then I saw the preview! Check it out for yourself right here: CLICK HERE TO SEE THE PREVIEW!!
When I saw that I said "Holy Mackerel!"---What this looks like is a whole lot better adaptation of WAR OF THE WORLDS (minus obnoxious Tom Cruise) with some incredible special effects. Suddenly, my entire attitude about playing the film changed! Take a look and I think you will see what I mean!
TRANSFORMERS (PG13)
(Showtimes in brackets are $5.50 "Bargain Matinees")
MON & TUES: 8:00
WED: (1:00) - (4:30)
THURS: 7:15

DIE HARD 4--Live Free or Die Hard (PG13) Yes, I felt the same way about Bruce Willis bringing back the Die Hard franchise as I did Stallone dragging Rocky out of the grave...However, I made a big mistake when I didn't play ROCKY BALBOA, as it was a surprise hit! I ain't gonna' do that again!! The reviews on this have been mostly excellent, and, I have to admit that the Die Hard movies are some of my "guilty pleasures" anyway!

DIE HARD 4--Live Free or Die Hard (PG13)
(Showtimes in brackets are $5.50 "Bargain Matinees")
FRI: (5:00) - 8:00
SAT & SUN: (2:00) - (5:00) - 8:00
MON & TUES: 7:00
WED: (2:00) - (5:00)
THURS: 6:45

EVAN ALMIGHTY (PG) Here are Steve Carell and Morgan Freeman in the most expensive comedy ever produced, and one with a genuine message too! Not only did the original, BRUCE ALMIGHTY give some life lessons, I was reminded of the now-forgotten OH, GOD movies with George Burns and John Denver. Lots of laffs here, but some actual profundities too!

EVAN ALMIGHTY (PG13)
(Showtimes in brackets are $5.50 "Bargain Matinees")
FRI: (4:15) - 7:15
SAT & SUN: (1:15) - (4:15) - 7:15
MON & TUES: 7:15
WED: (2:15) - (5:15)

WAITRESS (PG13) Quick, show me your hands: Is there ANYONE who has seen this movie that didn't simply LOVE it? We were very lucky to find a hole in our booked-solid Summer schedule where we could fit this in for a very limited engagement. You need to get on the good foot and trot yo' fanny down to The Avon just as fast as you can, because it MUST LEAVE SOON!! And, just as I know many of you were shocked to see Dick Van Dyke and Mickey Rooney show up in NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM, so you will be pleasantly surprised to see our ol' pal Andy Griffith in a pivotal role! If you end up missing this one, it isn't cause I didn't warn ya'!!

WAITRESS (PG13)
(Showtimes in brackets are $5.50 "Bargain Matinees")
FRI: (4:00) - 7:00

WHITHER GOEST CARTOONS??
It is always a source of pained nostalgia to realize that most audiences today don't know there was a time when all movies had a cartoon prior to the feature. Indeed, many of today's audiences think it is weird they aren't subjected to 20 minutes of mindless and offensive commercials before the film starts at The Avon! The cartoons we show before a feature are bonafide collector's items. They are rare "museum pieces"! And, we DO NOT play commercials!!!
And, I wonder if that is appreciated.
Today's "McTheaters" have done their best to obliterate what charm going to the movies used to be, and a couple of generations have grown up knowing nothing more than the abysmal experience that most of those "McTheaters" offer!

Digital projection? It looks like a big TV!!
In fact, the picture is TOO clear!
All the flaws in a performer's make-up and the smoke-and-mirrors special effects "seams" are now plainly visible.
All digital projection has accomplished is to further draw back that curtain the separated the audience from the false reality of the movie itself.
In short: More of the "magic" is lost.

Let's face it: In my opinion, to put digital projection into some of the rundown and poorly maintained "McTheaters" is tantamount to putting lipstick on a pig!!
I realize that "going digital" is a method that some "McTheater" chains are using in order to compete better, but, the sad truth is they would have been better off simply running a better operation!
There is no "fast track" to better business competing.
In the long run, it all comes down to where the audience would PREFER to come!

If you are reading this newsletter, we already know YOU have been indoctrinated to the magic and charm of The Avon Theater 3, but, we would ask that you do your best to let all of your friends and family know there IS an alternative to the dreaded "McTheaters" in Decatur!

And pity those who live in areas where they only have the "McTheaters"!!

Come See Me Soon!
I'll Be Looking for YOU!!
