a movie about four Aboriginal girls entertaining American troops in
<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = ST1 /><ST1:COUNTRY-REGION>Vietnam</ST1:COUNTRY-REGION>
in the late 1960s unless it were based on a true story. Other aspects of <I>The
Sapphires</I> have clearly been fictionalized, but the result is a crowd-pleaser
that balances irresistible r&b music hits, dynamic performances, and comedy
with the serious undercurrent of racial tension during a socially tumultuous
period. It’s a sly way of confronting disturbing facets of Australian history
without turning off an audience.</FONT></STRONG></FONT></FONT></DIV>

the leading actors are so skillful and appealing, beginning with Chris O’Dowd as

distinctive personalities (two sisters and their cousins) that made up the

by Tony Briggs and Keith Thompson is based on Briggs’ successful stage play,
inspired by the stories Briggs heard from his mother, who was one of the
real-life Sapphires. Director Wayne Blair manages to juggle the film’s diverse
ingredients quite well, if not always seamlessly: some of the story points are
heavy-handed, to be sure. But whatever nitpicks I could cite melt away under the
film’s infectious high spirits—and that parade of songs, including “I’ll Take
You There,” “What a Man,” and “Hold On, I’m a Comin’.” </STRONG></FONT></P>

the opening of <U>IRON MAN 3</U> (PG13) on Thursday, May 2nd at 9:00 PM (that's
tonight!) we officially kick off the Summer movie season! And what a season its
going to be! Its filled with the requisite summer fare; sequels, re-makes, comic
book heroes, and the occasional brilliant-film-that-required-original-thought!
Summer is the time for popcorn pictures, and we have the BEST popcorn in the
universe, by a long shot!<BR><BR>BUT...because of who the Avon Theater is, and
where we came from, we can't ignore our "art house" roots even in the a summer
filled with ginormous 'tent-pole' type pictures...<BR>So, the occasional
independent delight like this week's THE SAPPHIRES will continue to pop up every
once in a while!<BR><BR>Please make sure you get down to see these specialty
films as soon as you can. They don't stay around for very long, and stay even
shorter if you don't get your fanny down to see them!<BR><BR>THE SAPPHIRES
(PG13) preview has played for the past few months, and it really is a
'feel-good' gem of a
