size=3>I have to confess that I was getting pretty burned-out with the whole
James Bond thing. I saw DR. NO when I was a kid in the early 1960's, and I have
been following the series all this time. I thought Sean Connery was the best
Bond for a long time. I did not like Roger Moore (too cutesy), and Pierce
Brosnan never came off as really dangerous enough. Timothy Dalton was good, but
no one else seemed to think so, and George Lazenby's one shot at the role was
actually pretty promising...<BR>Then came DANIEL CRAIG.<BR>I didn't see CASINO
ROYALE when it first came out. We didn't play it at the Avon, and I was not
about to set foot on "enemy territory"!!<BR>-So, I finally saw it about a year
ago in my basement theater.<BR><EM>(Not as good an option as seeing it on the
Avon's biggest screen in the area, for
sure!)</EM></FONT></FONT></FONT></STRONG></FONT></FONT></FONT></STRONG></FONT></FONT></FONT></STRONG></FONT></STRONG></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=3>Let me tell you: DANIEL CRAIG has single-handedly re-energized
the series!<BR>I am SO EXCITED about this new entry, that I feel like I have
never seen a Bond film before!<BR>Craig's Bond is MEAN.<BR>You don't swill
Martinis with this guy, you run for your life!!<BR>He's on a revenge mission in
this entry, and boy, does he kick some butt!<BR>This movie will be one of the
biggest of the year, and we are so glad we are playing it!</FONT></DIV>

<DIV><FONT size=4><U>ROCKnROLLA</U> (R) <FONT size=3>Many of you know how I
love to find those "overlooked" films. I have even taught a class on them for
the past 6 Summers! Here is a British crime caper movie with GERARD BUTLER and
TOM WILKINSON that will knock you out! Just like last week's newsletter, I will
let you see what internationally-known film critic Leonard Maltin had to say
about this one:<BR></FONT><FONT face=Arial size=2>ROCKNROLLA — Those of us who
reveled in the audacity of Guy Ritchie’s early, explosive British gangster films
(<EM>Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels </EM>and<EM> Snatch</EM>) will welcome
his return to form with <EM>Rocknrolla</EM>, a heady mix of colorful characters,
ricocheting plot points, and in-your-face action. </FONT>
<P><FONT face=Arial size=2>Gerard Butler and Idris Elba play One-Two and
Mumbles, a couple of ready-for-anything guys whose nicknames are never
explained. They’re hired by slick money-mover Thandie Newton to pull off a
daring robbery that sets many wheels in motion, and threatens to blow up in all
of their faces. Meanwhile, old-school crime boss Tom Wilkinson tries to show the
new guy in town—a Russian with oodles of money—that he still pulls the strings.
</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=Arial size=2>This densely-plotted movie requires narration to
identify all of its characters and their relation to one another; the expanse of
this ensemble is almost worthy of Dickens, ranging from a mind-blown rock star
to a civil servant on the take. The picture might have been improved by some
tightening, but the patient viewer will be rewarded with the kind of gut-level
satisfaction Ritchie’s characters themselves enjoy. Ritchie withholds the
graphic use of violence until the climax, when it hits us right between the
eyes. The end title promises a reunion of the main characters in a sequel which
hasn’t yet been scheduled (Ritchie is going mainstream—so it seems—with a new
film about Sherlock Holmes) but if and when it comes to pass, I’ll be among the
first in line to see it. -Leonard Maltin (used with
permission)<BR></FONT></FONT><FONT size=4><U>ROCKnROLLA</U> (R) <FONT
