IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK (R)
Set in early-1970s Harlem, If Beale Street Could Talk is a timeless and
moving love story of both a couple's unbreakable bond and the
African-American family's empowering embrace, as told through the eyes of
19-year-old Tish Rivers (screen newcomer KiKi Layne). A daughter and
wife-to-be, Tish vividly recalls the passion, respect and trust that have
connected her and her artist fiancé Alonzo Hunt, who goes by the nickname
Fonny (Stephan James). Friends since childhood, the devoted couple dream of
a future together but their plans are derailed when Fonny is arrested for a
crime he did not commit. Through the unique intimacy and power of cinema, If
Beale Street Could Talk honors the author's vision.

RANTS, RAVES & RAMBLINGS FROM THE HEAD HONCHO
So, the Oscars are over for another year, and what a great Oscar show it
was!
As someone who has watched the Oscars avidly for over 60 years, I was
impressed at the streamlining of what had become a bloated and tedious
program.
Going without a host, really worked. The flow was much better.

Look, I come from the era where it was unthinkable that anyone but Bob Hope
could host the Oscars (he did it 19 times!), then came Johnny Carson, who
took the mantle quite nicely. Billy Crystal was probably the last of the
iconic Oscar hosts we will see in the near future. And, maybe this hostless
form will continue since it worked so well.

What is the difference between now and then? We are all suffering from
“Award Fatigue”. There are so many award shows now, that its nigh impossible
to keep track of all of them! The Oscars are the top of the heap, for sure,
but many people just yawn and say “Another chance for Hollywood to pat
itself on the back?”. Indeed, I don’t even want to attempt to list all the
award shows here because it would be futile at best.

A high point of this year’s Oscars was the absolutely incendiary performance
by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga of the song “Shallow” from A Star is Born.
Not only was this staged in completely unique manner, with Cooper and Gaga
rising from their seats in the audience to take a stage bare of anything but
a piano, but the chemistry between those two was so palpable, you almost
felt like you were spying on a lover’s tryst. Was it all only acting? The
internet has been ablaze with that speculation since that night.
Opening the show with a rousing rock medley by Queen, was a real soul
stirrer to this old Oscar viewer too!

I do have a quibble that I’m surprised there has been so little debate
about

Why are the excellent movies made by HBO, Showtime and the like relegated to
EMMY award status, and the also excellent films made by the streaming
platforms like Netflix and Hulu allowed to compete for OSCARS??

The HBO & Showtime movies are NOT theatrical releases, but, here’s the news:
NEITHER ARE THE STREAMING MOVIES!

Maybe the explanation is the oldest one of all: Netflix, et al, is throwing
a LOT of money around Hollywood, and hiring considerable talent.
But, that doesn’t make it right that movies from streaming services, which
are the ANTITHESIS OF THEATRICAL EXHIBITION, should be granted Oscar
consideration as opposed to Emmy.

(And I’m not just saying this because I detested Netflix’s ROMA either. I
felt ROMA got exactly what it deserved out of its ridiculous TEN
nominations; “Best Foreign Film”, “Best Director” and “Best Cinematography”
(the black & white lensing was scintillating)

And the award shows are over until next time!
