RANTS, RAVES & RAMBLINGS FROM THE HEAD HONCHO
So, I have decided which movie should win "Best Picture", of the 8 nominees
for the Oscar on Sunday.

It's GREEN BOOK. It's got to be GREEN BOOK.
I don't want to debate about what SHOULD have been nominated; let's talk
about what WAS nominated.
(In no particular order)

1.) THE FAVOURITE- Definitely NOT a crowd pleaser. A little too artsy-fartsy
for its own good.

2.) ROMA - Yeah, I get it. Great black & white photography and well-done
sense of time and place (Mexico City in the 60's), BUT.Just attempt to try
and watch this. It's on Netflix, so you can see it for free. It's as boring
as watching paint dry. Maybe it will win "Best Foreign Film" (its subtitled
in Spanish), but heaven help the Oscars if this wins "Best Picture".

3.) A STAR IS BORN - I liked it. I think you did too. It's a timeless story
that's been remade FIVE times (yes, FIVE times; other film critics will try
and say "4", but they don't know diddly about film history) it's FIVE times.
The story always works. I've liked ALL the versions. Bradley Cooper did a
good job acting and directing (and singing, but it wasn't that hard to do
with those songs) Lady Gaga, again shows she has real talent. But, no cigar.

4.) VICE - Ok, I love anything that Amy Adams is in. She's incapable of
being mediocre, in my opinion. Christian Bale as Dick Cheney famously does a
Robert DeNiro in "Raging Bull" by piling on the pounds, and had the help of
prosthetics. I like director Adam McKay's work. His "The Big Short" was also
nominated for "Best Picture", and had much of the same cast. I just don't
get those 'Oscar Vibes' from it.

5.) BLACK PANTHER - A terrific film! History making in that comic book
superhero movies make TONS of money, but don't get any awards. The all-black
cast is superb, and the effects are stunning. It was great in 3D. I just
don't think this is the year the Oscars start giving love to comic book
movies. The fact that it was NOMINATED is quite a feat, in and of itself.

6.) BLACKKKLANSMAN - I've always liked Spike Lee films. He is a great
filmmaker, and deserves more recognition of such. He is up for "Best
Director" this year, and I really hope he gets it for his body of work.but,
not for this.

This is an uneven, and sometimes pandering film. It's entertaining. But,
that doesn't win the Oscar.

7.) BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY - Now, here is a crowd pleaser! It's great fun, and a
real treat for the fans of the band Queen (of which I am not). The
performances are spot-on, and the music will take you back to those times of
your youth. I would say this COULD be the upset and be the winner. but, I
don't feel it.

8.) GREEN BOOK - This has not made that much money. The title may be too
vague for some, but I knew exactly what it was. Mahershala Ali, who won the
Oscar last year, is a powerhouse actor, and will probably win the Oscar
again this year. Viggo Mortensen, who is quite the versatile actor, going
from The Lord of the Rings, to such incredible films like A History of
Violence and Eastern Promises, is A+ as usual. The film has an essentially
true story basis, but has a lot of heart going for it too. THIS ONE I feel
'Oscar Vibes' for! It's a feel good movie, and benefits from repeated
viewings. In my opinion: THIS IS THE WINNER!!

Ok, so that's that about that. The Oscars are Sunday, and I'll be watching
with my wife and big-time Jalapeno pizza, (the Oscars are OUR "Super Bowl")
and we'll see how I did with my prediction.
