CRAZY RICH ASIANS (PG13)
"Crazy Rich Asians" follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu (Wu) as she
accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young (Golding), to his best
friend's wedding in Singapore. Excited about visiting Asia for the first
time but nervous about meeting Nick's family, Rachel is unprepared to learn
that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life. It
turns out that he is not only the scion of one of the country's wealthiest
families but also one of its most sought-after bachelors. Being on Nick's
arm puts a target on Rachel's back, with jealous socialites and, worse,
Nick's own disapproving mother (Yeoh) taking aim. And it soon becomes clear
that while money can't buy love, it can definitely complicate things. 
Critics Consensus: With a terrific cast and a surfeit of visual razzle
dazzle, Crazy Rich Asians takes a satisfying step forward for screen
representation while deftly drawing inspiration from the classic -- and
still effective -- rom-com formula.

THE MEG (PG13)
A deep-sea submersible--part of an international undersea observation
program--has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be
extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the
Pacific... with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep
sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary
Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter
Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew--and the ocean itself--from this
unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the
Megalodon. What no one could have imagined is that, years before, Taylor had
encountered this same terrifying creature.

Will (Ben Foster) and his teenage daughter, Tom (Thomasin Harcourt
McKenzie), have lived off the grid for years in the forests of Portland,
Oregon. When their idyllic life is shattered, both are put into social
services. After clashing with their new surroundings, Will and Tom set off
on a harrowing journey back to their wild homeland. The film is directed by
Debra Granik from a script adapted by Granik and Anne Rosellini.
Critics Consensus: Leave No Trace takes an effectively low-key approach to a
potentially sensationalistic story -- and further benefits from brilliant
work by Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie.

THE SEAGULL explores, with comedy and melancholy, the obsessive nature of
love, the tangled relationships between parents and children, and the
transcendent value and psychic toll of art.

I can't believe the summer is almost gone, and my Fall Film Classes (see
below) start in less than a month!
Soon, we'll be talking about Halloween, and the Avon's legendary
stage/screen production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show! 
Then its Turkey time! And then.Santa is coming to town!
And then? New Year's!
And then? THREE MONTHS OF WINTER HELL!

But right now, as of this writing, I'm looking forward to my birthday on
Tuesday, August 28th.
It's the only time of year I get to eat my traditional birthday dinner of
Chicken Fried Steak (from an old family recipe) and Desert Inn Cake (from a
recipe purloined from the Las Vegas Desert Inn's chef almost 60 years ago!

This year, my birthday is especially important, because I will turn 40!

(My wife of 34 years is much older than I am).
