It's 2029. Mutants are gone--or very nearly so. An isolated, despondent
Logan is drinking his days away in a hideout on a remote stretch of the
Mexican border, picking up petty cash as a driver for hire. His companions
in exile are the outcast Caliban and an ailing Professor X, whose singular
mind is plagued by worsening seizures. But Logan's attempts to hide from the
world and his legacy abruptly end when a mysterious woman appears with an
urgent request--that Logan shepherd an extraordinary young girl to safety.

Critics Consensus: Hugh Jackman makes the most of his final outing as
Wolverine with a gritty, nuanced performance in a violent but surprisingly
thoughtful superhero action film that defies genre conventions.

FENCES (PG13) 
Denzel Washington directed and stars in this adaptation of August Wilson's
Pulitzer Prize-winning play, which centers on a black garbage collector
named Troy Maxson in 1950s Pittsburgh. Bitter that baseball's color barrier
was only broken after his own heyday in the Negro Leagues, Maxson is prone
to taking out his frustrations on his loved ones. Both Washington and
co-star Viola Davis won Tonys for their performances in the 2010 revival of
the play. Stephen Henderson, Jovan Adepo, Russell Hornsby, and Mykelti
Williamson round out the supporting cast.
Critics Consensus: From its reunited Broadway stars to its screenplay, the
solidly crafted Fences finds its Pulitzer-winning source material
fundamentally unchanged -- and still just as powerful.

Ex-maid of honor Eloise- having been relieved of her duties after being
unceremoniously dumped by the best man via text - decides to hold her head
up high and attend her oldest friend's wedding anyway. She finds herself
seated at the 'random' table in the back of the ballroom with a disparate
group of strangers, most of whom should have known to just send regrets. As
everyone's secrets are revealed, Eloise learns a thing or two from the
denizens of Table 19. Friendships - and even a little romance - can happen
under the most unlikely circumstances.

RANTS, RAVES & RAMBLINGS FROM THE HEAD HONCHO
I suppose everyone who actually reads this weekly ramble is waiting for me
to weigh in on the Oscars debacle.
(And, make no mistake about it, 'debacle' was what it was!)

But, all I really feel is a kind of sadness.
The Oscars, as I knew and loved them, are no more.

This was the 89th year for the gold statuettes, and I believe the real
'magic' has been gone for many years.
But, I kept waiting every year for true glamour and Hollywood hoo-hah to
rear its head again.
It was apparently a futile thing!

This year seemed to be the apotheosis of "reaping what you sow", as a
bubbling cauldron of ageism, racism, reverse-racism, commercialism, sexism
and just about every other "ism" you can define finally reached its boiling
point.

How ironic that one of the most talented artists in the business, 79 year
old, reclusive Warren Beatty, would be at the ground zero of this
unfortunate event. (And totally blameless in the snafu that transpired, yet
was pilloried for it anyway, because he's.well.79.)

My dear departed Mother used to say to me: "Skippy, don't ever discuss
politics or religion with your customers!"

So, I hope, wherever she is now, she doesn't think that I have already said
too much.
