RANTS, RAVES & RAMBLINGS FROM THE HEAD HONCHO

As I write "2016" for the first time, all I can think about is this is the
year the Avon turns 100 years old!
It was Thanksgiving of 1916 when a very daring venture was attempted on
North Water Street: A big theater devoted ONLY to movies!

Up to that time, movies were shown in converted vaudeville houses (like our
Lincoln Square Theater), or small store fronts.

The idea of a large theater showing ONLY movies was pure folly in 1916!
"What are they thinking??" was the local word around town.

Now, 100 years later, the Avon definitely belies its age; it's a pretty spry
old bird!

An important distinction to remember is: Besides a short few years when the
theater was closed and abandoned, the Avon has been open CONTINUOUSLY since
1916!!

Back in April of 1999, when I dared to think I could re-open the Avon and do
something with it, the cry around town was (again) "What are they
thinking?".

Now, all these near 17 years later, most can't remember a time when the Avon
wasn't part of their lives.

My family and I, and all of our wonderful staffers, past and present (some
of them family and some almost) are all very mindful of the fact that WE are
the custodians of an important local landmark. Many hard-working people came
before us to bring us to this point.

Every day, when working in those ancient walls, we are mindful of the
generations of moviegoers who depend on us to provide quality entertainment
and snack items at an economical price.
(We see newcomers are shocked they can get BETTER popcorn, and BETTER
everything, but at a lower price than the other theaters! 
It goes against all logic!!)

But, that's always been the Avon's story.

We swim against the current...

We defy all logic.
We ignore the bottom line.

AND.

We prevail!

Here's to the next 100 years!!
