SAVING MR. BANKS (PG13) Comedy / Biography 121 min (not including 8 to 12 min of previews)
NOW IN ITS 3RD HUGE WEEK!! EVERYONE LOVES THIS ONE!!
Two-time Academy Award (R)-winner Emma Thompson and fellow double Oscar (R)-winner Tom Hanks topline Disney's "Saving Mr. Banks," inspired by the extraordinary, untold backstory of how Disney's classic "Mary Poppins" made it to the screen. When Walt Disney's daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers' "Mary Poppins," he made them a promise-one that he didn't realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney's plans for the adaptation. For those two short weeks in 1961, Walt Disney pulls out all the stops, and together they set Mary Poppins free to ultimately make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history.

PHILOMENA (PG13) Drama 1 hr 34 min (not including 8 to 12 min of previews)

Based on the 2009 investigative book by BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith, The Lost Child of Philomena Lee, PHILOMENA focuses on the efforts of Philomena Lee (Dench), mother to a boy conceived out of wedlock - something her Irish-Catholic community didn't have the highest opinion of - and given away for adoption in the United States. In following church doctrine, she was forced to sign a contract that wouldn't allow for any sort of inquiry into the son's whereabouts. After starting a family years later in England and, for the most part, moving on with her life, Lee meets Sixsmith (Coogan), a BBC reporter with whom she decides to discover her long-lost son.

ALL IS LOST (PG13) Suspense/Adventure 1 hr 46 min (not including 8 to 12 min of previews)
Anchored by another tremendous performance in a career full of them, All Is Lost offers a moving, eminently worthwhile testament to Robert Redford's ability to hold the screen.
Deep into a solo voyage in the Indian Ocean, an unnamed man (Redford) wakes to find his 39-foot yacht taking on water after a collision with a shipping container left floating on the high seas. With his navigation equipment and radio disabled, the man sails unknowingly into the path of a violent storm. Despite his success in patching the breached hull, his mariner's intuition and a strength that belies his age, the man barely survives the tempest. Using only a sextant and nautical maps to chart his progress, he is forced to rely on ocean currents to carry him into a shipping lane in hopes of hailing a passing vessel. But with the sun unrelenting, sharks circling and his meager supplies dwindling, the ever-resourceful sailor soon finds himself staring his mortality in the face.

RANTS, RAVES & RAMBLINGS FROM THE HEAD HONCHO
So, holiday season 2013 is officially over, and I hope all of you had a great one!
At the Avon, we were thoroughly blessed that the Disney studios decided WE were the best choice of all the local venues to play their wonderful SAVING MR. BANKS on an exclusive basis!
We are now starting our 3rd week of it, and the crowds just keep on coming!

Add to that our current exclusives of Judi Dench in PHILOMENA and Robert Redford's astounding ALL IS LOST, and, well...our cup does truly runneth over!
I always love it when I can bring the loyal Avon crowd the exact kind of movies they want, and right now, we have three perfect examples of that!
(And, not a "mall movie" in sight!! HaHaHa)

I guess the Avon's "art house" roots, and my 13 years teaching film classes for Richland (more about that in a minute) show up many times in my booking choices. I would rather give all of you QUALITY than the exercises in cinema vapidity that make up most of the movies playing at what seems every other theater in the country...
Sometimes, we HAVE TO play those "other" films too, but I'd much rather give you what has been called for years as "Avon Movies".

Come show me this weekend that you agree with me!
We've got THREE EXCELLENT "AVON MOVIES"!!
Come see them ALL!!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
AND, SPEAKING OF MY FILM CLASSES...
I made it clear last Fall that I was simply too busy with our new theater in Sterling, Illinois, and a couple of other top-secret projects, to continue doing my Richland-at-the-Avon film classes any longer. After 13 years straight of conducting them (and loving every minute), I was simply too pressed for time to continue them...
BUT...
My wife, Susan, and daughter, Melissa (the Avon's Gourmet "Mr. Popcorn" chef) have taken much of the operations responsibility of Sterling over, and I find myself in a situation where people are asking if I won't at least consider resuming the summer "Overlooked Films" classes. (These were the most popular of all the film classes).
Then, add to all of that, an official from Richland contacted me just an hour ago asking the very same thing!

So, to all my former students out there reading this...what do you think?

NO DOUBT ABOUT IT...
THE GREATEST CAST ON EARTH!!!
