Marvel's "Iron Man 3" pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

THE SAPPHIRES (PG13) Comedy / Musical 1 hr. 39 min. (not including 8 to 12 min of previews and/or cartoon)
Inspired by a true story, THE SAPPHIRES follows four vivacious, young and talented Australian Aboriginal girls from a remote mission as they learn about love, friendship and war when their all girl group The Sapphires entertains the U.S. troops in Vietnam in 1968. Cynthia (Tapsell), Gail (Mailman), Julie (Mauboy) and Kay (Sebbens) are discovered by Dave (O'Dowd), a good-humored talent scout with a kind heart, very little rhythm but a great knowledge of soul music. As their manager, Dave books the sisters their first true gig giving them their first taste of stardom, and travels them to Vietnam to sing for the American troops.

Hiya Folks!! The Head Honcho here with Leonard Maltin's review of THE SAPPHIRES. We do this every once in a while when we want to showcase a particular "Avon Discovery", so....Take it away, Leonard!!

THE SAPPHIRES reviewed by Leonard Maltin
I can’t imagine anyone concocting a movie about four Aboriginal girls entertaining American troops in Vietnam in the late 1960s unless it were based on a true story. Other aspects of The Sapphires have clearly been fictionalized, but the result is a crowd-pleaser that balances irresistible r&b music hits, dynamic performances, and comedy with the serious undercurrent of racial tension during a socially tumultuous period. It’s a sly way of confronting disturbing facets of Australian history without turning off an audience.
It helps that the leading actors are so skillful and appealing, beginning with Chris O’Dowd as a roguish Irishman who becomes the girls’ manager; the spontaneity of his humor is matched only by the charm and honesty of his performance. Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy, Shari Stebbens, and Miranda Tapsell effectively convey the distinctive personalities (two sisters and their cousins) that made up the unlikely but talented singing group.

The screenplay by Tony Briggs and Keith Thompson is based on Briggs’ successful stage play, inspired by the stories Briggs heard from his mother, who was one of the real-life Sapphires. Director Wayne Blair manages to juggle the film’s diverse ingredients quite well, if not always seamlessly: some of the story points are heavy-handed, to be sure. But whatever nitpicks I could cite melt away under the film’s infectious high spirits—and that parade of songs, including “I’ll Take You There,” “What a Man,” and “Hold On, I’m a Comin’.”

The Sapphires is a feel-good movie of universal appeal, with just enough social history to give it substance along with entertainment value.
I hope word-of-mouth is strong enough to win it the audience it deserves here in the States. c Leonard Maltin (used with permission)

42 (PG13) Drama / Biography 2 hr. 5 min (not including 8 to 12 min of previews and/or cartoon)

Hero is a word we hear often in sports, but heroism is not always about achievements on the field of play. "42" tells the story of two men-the great Jackie Robinson and legendary Brooklyn Dodgers GM Branch Rickey-whose brave stand against prejudice forever changed the world by changing the game of baseball. In 1946, Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) put himself at the forefront of history when he signed Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) to the team, breaking Major League Baseball's infamous color line. But the deal also put both Robinson and Rickey in the firing line of the public, the press and even other players. Facing unabashed racism from every side, Robinson was forced to demonstrate tremendous courage and restraint by not reacting in kind, knowing that any incident could destroy his and Rickey's hopes. Instead, Number 42 let his talent on the field do the talking-ultimately winning over fans and his teammates, silencing his critics, and paving the way for others to follow.

RANTS, RAVES & RAMBLINGS FROM THE HEAD HONCHO
So, with the opening of IRON MAN 3 (PG13) on Thursday, May 2nd at 9:00 PM (that's tonight!) we officially kick off the Summer movie season! And what a season its going to be! Its filled with the requisite summer fare; sequels, re-makes, comic book heroes, and the occasional brilliant-film-that-required-original-thought! Summer is the time for popcorn pictures, and we have the BEST popcorn in the universe, by a long shot!

BUT...because of who the Avon Theater is, and where we came from, we can't ignore our "art house" roots even in the a summer filled with ginormous 'tent-pole' type pictures...
So, the occasional independent delight like this week's THE SAPPHIRES will continue to pop up every once in a while!

Please make sure you get down to see these specialty films as soon as you can. They don't stay around for very long, and stay even shorter if you don't get your fanny down to see them!

THE SAPPHIRES (PG13) preview has played for the past few months, and it really is a 'feel-good' gem of a film!
It was NOT easy to get it booked, so, major guilt trip if you don't get thee down to see it!!

NEW FOOD ITEM
We've added Mini-Bagel Dog bites to our menu!
These are all-beef little doggies from Nathan's, and try them with a mustard dip or a ketchup/mustard mix (or some of our Nacho cheese!)
We have hopes they will join some of our wildly popular other extended menu favorites like our Soft Pretzel Bites or our WhiteCastle Hamburgers!

(And, of course, our Chicago Vienna Beef All-Beef Hot Dogs are a good way to get a light dinner at The Avon and save room for popcorn!)
