GANGSTER SQUAD  (R)    Crime/Action  110 min  (not including 8 to 12 min of previews and/or cartoon)
Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and-if he has his way-every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It's enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop...except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen's world apart. 
What better studio to bring us a period gangster film than the studio that started the entire genre!?  Warner Bros! 
Warners was the home of Bogart, Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, George Raft, and made a gazillion great tommy gun epics! In this one Sean Penn plays real life bad hombre Mickey Cohen, and the 'gangster squad' were some rogue cops who didn't play by the rules! Great stuff!!!

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption-a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine's (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever. In December 2012, the world's longest-running musical brings its power to the big screen!

But when 21st century problems collide with Artie and Diane's old school methods of tough rules, lots of love and old-fashioned games, it's learning to bend - and not holding your ground - that binds a family together.

And, so, we settle in for the long winter's ride....
By the time Summer is in full swing, we will have converted our projection and sound to the mandatory-but-not-superior digital, and there may be a few other somewhat pleasant surprises in store as well.

Oscar season is upon us, and, as usual there are some shocking omissions in the nominations, and some totally unworthy additions.
(For more on that, you'll need to attend my next Richland-at-the-Avon film class starting Jan. 31st!).

And, speaking of my Richland-at-the-Avon film classes, we'll give you more info next week!
They're coming up soon, after an 8 week hiatus for the holiday season!
