LEE DANIELS' THE BUTLER tells the story of a White House butler who served eight American presidents over three decades. The film traces the dramatic changes that swept American society during this time, from the civil rights movement to Vietnam and beyond, and how those changes affected this man's life and family. Forest Whitaker stars as the butler with Robin Williams as Dwight Eisenhower, John Cusack as Richard Nixon, Alan Rickman as Ronald Reagan, James Marsden as John F. Kennedy, Liev Schreiber as Lyndon B. Johnson, and many more.

David Burke (Jason Sudeikis) is a small-time pot dealer whose clientele includes chefs and soccer moms, but no kids-after all, he has his scruples. So what could go wrong? Plenty. Preferring to keep a low profile for obvious reasons, he learns the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished when he tries to help out some local teens and winds up getting jumped by a trio of gutter punks. Stealing his stash and his cash, they leave him in major debt to his supplier, Brad (Ed Helms). In order to wipe the slate clean-and maintain a clean bill of health-David must now become a big-time drug smuggler by bringing Brad's latest shipment in from Mexico. Twisting the arms of his neighbors, cynical stripper Rose (Jennifer Aniston) and wannabe customer Kenny (Will Poulter), and the tatted-and-pierced streetwise teen Casey (Emma Roberts), he devises a foolproof plan. One fake wife, two pretend kids and a huge, shiny RV later, the "Millers" are headed south of the border for a Fourth of July weekend that is sure to end with a bang.

Kristen Wiig stars as Imogene, once a promising young New York playwright whose promise has fizzled, thanks to a crisis of confidence. Heavily in denial about being dumped by her society boyfriend, Imogene uses her skill for drama to stage an elaborate fake suicide as an appeal for his sympathy. But her attempt backfires when she's put into the custody of Zelda, her estranged gambling addict mother (Annette Bening), and must return home with her to the Jersey shore. Desperate to get back to her Manhattan circle of so- called friends, Imogene must finally deal with her family, including her unique brother (Christopher Fitzgerald), Zelda's new boyfriend The Bousche (Matt Dillon), plus a cute young lodger (Darren Criss),who together help Imogene sort out her place in the world.

Film Cans--The End of an Era

Take a good look at the picture above...
This is something you will see no more.
It is an iconic symbol of the movies, but not the movies of today any longer.

This past week, The Avon finally submitted to mandated technology and converted to all digital projection and sound.
It was VERY expensive for us, and we didn't have fundraisers, or Kickstarter programs, or grants, or donations to help us.

The news has been filled with stories of struggling independent theaters who have already either closed down, or are on the verge of doing so unless they can raise the money for this forced digital conversion.
I really feel for them!
(And it is scary to think we may have been among their ranks!).

We held out with film as long as we could, and probably could've hung in there until the end of the year....
But, the die was cast.
Film will not even be manufactured any longer after the end of 2013!

So, shed a tear for all those Ma & Pa theaters and drive-ins who now will shutter their doors due to the cost of this new technology.
(It averages about $50,000 per screen, if you shop for the right deals!).

But, also send thanks to God that the Avon will not be among those causalities!

Back in 1999, when we rescued the Avon from oblivion, it was not just ME, but a whole lot of people working together to bring the great old place back to life...
So, I can say that I was among the people who saved the Avon back in 1999.

BUT...
Make no mistake about it:
THIS TIME, THE AVON WAS SAVED BY ME SINGLE-HANDEDLY!
I searched for over FOUR YEARS for the right deals on this conversion, and waited for prices to recede a bit too.
Finally, it was time.
Fish or cut bait.

Now, its done.
The Avon has moved into the future.

My final sacrifice for a downtown Decatur re-birth I envisioned and believed in long before the current city leaders began their tinkering.
