A few days ago, my wife and I watched BACHELORETTE in a special advance screening...

Now, let's be frank here: I am a VERY hard-to-please movie fan, I have been teaching college film courses for close to 12 years, and I am very intolerant of bad movies....
... but, MY WIFE...
She is the toughest critic of all!
She has actually walked out of some of the biggest movies in the world!
(When we saw AVATAR, she ankled about 90 minutes in calling it "trite and predictable")

Yet, we BOTH laughed ourselves silly at BACHELORETTE!
YES, it is wild and very raunchy!
YES, there are times you need to remember it IS rated "R"! VERY "R"!

If you liked BRIDESMAIDS and THE HANGOVER, then you will like BACHELORETTE!!

(I remember I didn't play BRIDESMAIDS when it first came out because I was afraid Avon audiences would think it too raw!
THEN, when it became this huge hit, I brought it in!
Avon audiences had no problem with the ribald humor.)

Well, here we go again!
If you are easily offended, and don't ever laugh at a dirty joke, then this is not for you!

BUT, for the 99.99% of the rest of us: get ready to laugh!!!

How do you take a wacky premise and make it believable enough to sustain a feature-length film? What’s more, how do you incorporate a science-fiction element in a low-budget indie production? For answers, see the engaging new comedy Safety Not Guaranteed, which won newcomer Derek Connolly the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. If you like low-key, offbeat comedies, consider it a must-see. 

The film covers interesting ground, literally speaking, in Washington state, which gives it a fresh look and feel. It’s also extremely well cast. Jake Johnson plays a reporter for Seattle magazine who’s a bit of a wiseguy; he takes on the task of finding the person who placed an oddball classified ad seeking a companion for time travel. The assignment takes him back to his hometown of Ocean View, where he might have a chance to reconnect with an old flame.

He’s also saddled with two interns, a dour college graduate who hasn’t yet found a real job (Aubrey Plaza) and a dense, self-serious student (Karan Soni). Identifying the guy who placed the time-travel ad (Mark Duplass) isn’t very hard, but Plaza has to win his confidence and try to determine if he’s for real.

Connolly’s script is well realized by another newcomer, director Colin Trevorrow. Instead of cheap laughs, they give us observational humor based on character quirks and the natural incongruities that arise when disparate partners join together on a cockeyed quest.


Safety Not Guaranteed was inspired by a genuine classified ad that first appeared in a survivalist magazine in the 1990s and then, years later, went viral on the Internet. Connolly took inspiration from the ad and expanded it into a clever, likable screenplay that fleshes out its characters and doesn’t turn them into cardboard stereotypes. Having independent-film guru Mark Duplass on board, as a costar and coproducer, doesn’t hurt. As audiences are bound to discover during the course of this busy year, he’s a first-rate actor. The NEW Richland-at-the-Avon Film Classes for this Fall start on Thursday, Sept. 13th at 6:30 PM!!
Since it's 4 years since the last Presidential election, when we did our highly-popular "POLITICS AT THE MOVIES" classes, we will continue that with PART TWO of that series called (of course) "POLITICS AT THE MOVIES---PART TWO"
The screening and discussion film series starts THURSDAY, Sept. 13th @ 6:30 PM
Cost is $80 for the 8 weeks, and you can enroll the night of the first class!
Just come to the Avon a little before 6:30, and a Richland official will process your enrollment!

MY PLEDGE TO YOU:
There is NO "personal agenda" to this "Politics at the Movies--Part 2" series.
We will NOT be discussing the current elections in any way, shape, or form.

As we did 4 years ago, we will be showing and discussing classic films from Hollywood that pertain to
our political process. There will be no "documentaries" or films calculated to have any bearing on today's political races.

Any inferences that may be derived from studying these chronicles of the American political system will be entirely your own.

I sincerely hope you will join us in this series!
