"The darkness that settles over a movie theater is equivalent to the act of closing the eyes.
Then, on screen, as within the human being, the nocturnal voyage into the unconscious begins."
--Luis Bunuel

And, many theaters, including THE AVON, did not play TOY STORY 3 in 3D, and it was just as good, if not better!
Join the growing ranks of movie-goers who are sick and tired of the 3D surcharges, and just the headache-inducing 3D format altogether!

VOTE WITH YOUR WALLET, or the Hollywood clueless will continue to shove 3D down your throat!
What are the THREE "D"'s in 3D?? Howsabout DUMB, DUMBER & DUMBEST???

127 HOURS (R)
Not only is JAMES FRANCO one of the front-runners for the "Best Actor" Oscar he has now been nominated for, this extraordinary true story will have you talking and debating for days!
Honestly, now...

What would YOU do to survive?
It's a tough question when it is all conjecture...
BUT, what if YOU were in a situation where the question was either simply perish or take "drastic measures" and live to tell of your adventure?
This incredible film by Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle, is no walk in the park.

It will challenge you in ways that "Black Swan" only hinted at...
But it is also life-affirming to the max!

THE RITE (PG13)
For those of you who have been wondering when we were going to start to end "Award Season" and get back to just plain MOVIES!!
Here is ANTHONY HOPKINS (who just gets more creepy all the time) and a fine cast in the TRUE story of a possession and resulting exorcism.
It must be stressed that this is "PG13", so don't worry about it getting too much into the area of "objectionable".
Just look for the same atmospheric and spooky fun, and in a REAL haunted theater too!

ALL GOOD THINGS (R)
Some of you may already be aware that RYAN GOSLING is one of our finest younger actors.

This is someone that should have a long and distinguished career if he manages it correctly and continues to deliver top-notch performances. This true-crime murder story set in the '80's is an excellent film, and co-stars KIRSTEN DUNST (who is always a delight), and the always-solid FRANK LANGELLA.

RANTS, RAVINGS & RUMBLINGS FROM THE HEAD HONCHO...

So, "Award Season" is now in full flower...
The Golden Globe, and the DGA, and Critic's Choice, and all the rest of the hoo-hah awards culminate with the Oscars on Feb. 27th...
So, it's almost over!
I gave you a list at the top of this newsletter that detailed the "Best Picture" nominated films that DID play at The Avon, and the ones that did not!

I also call attention to the fact that I touted WINTER'S BONE for months, and even told all of you it would get a "Best Picture" nomination (which it did) and a "Best Actress" nomination (which it did) and a "Best Supporting Actor" nomination (which it did).
And, remember this: WE WERE THE ONLY THEATER IN THE ENTIRE STATE THAT PLAYED "WINTER'S BONE" FOR SEVERAL WEEKS!

That's what I why I need all of you to take a leap of faith and realize that, with only 3 screens, we can't play everything!
Having said that, there are "other" dynamics that prevent us from playing certain films.

Sometimes it is pure luck of the draw on a limited release film, and sometimes it is politics.

BUT...I always try to do the best by all of you despite some of the limitations we encounter from time to time.

I guess I am really asking something simple:
Please concentrate on what we ARE playing, not what we are NOT playing.

There are always good reasons when we do not play something, it is not some caprice or whim.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
And, the only awards I've been really excited about is the Herald & Review's Reader's Choice awards that will be announced soon?

Will the Avon get #1 "Best Place to See a Movie" again this year?

Will your favorite restaurant or watering hole be named the #1?

WHO do you think will be the #1 "Best Decaturite"?? Will it be ME, like last year, or someone more deserving?

We'll find out soon in the special Reader's Choice section of the Herald & Review!
I can't wait!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I'm Looking for ALL of You This Weekend!
That means, you and you and...YOU!!
