JEFF BRIDGES underscores that fact that he was long-overdue for that "Best Actor" Oscar last year; MATT DAMON continues to impress me with his versatility; JOSH BROLIN as a great bad guy and newcomer HAILEE STEINFELD is an absolute marvel as the 14 year old girl who is the real one with "grit". 
A musical score that will also surprise you with its inventive reliance on a traditional gospel tune, and powerful writing and directing by JOEL AND ETHAN COEN.
If you miss seeing this one, don't come crying to me.

FAIR GAME (PG13) (EXCLUSIVE LIMITED ENGAGEMENT)
Oscar nominee, NAOMI WATTS (one of my personal faves) and Oscar winner, SEAN PENN, star in this ripped-from-the-headlines story of outed CIA agent, Valerie Plame, and the aftermath of the events when she was "burned" by the very people who should have protected her most. This is an excellent film, that was, sadly, overlooked in the holiday hoopla a couple months back. We had an eye on it, and wanted to bring it in when the time was right.
This time of year, Hollywood throws out a lot of new release "also rans", while they concentrate mostly on award season movies that have been in release since Christmas.
It is fortunate there are still a few good ones out there that never played the area. We have more of that type coming in future weeks.

THE FIGHTER (R) (FINAL WEEK!)
I have to tell you that CHRISTIAN BALE'S Golden Globe winning performance in this fine film, is one of the most astounding performances by an actor I've ever seen. All during the film (which is VERY, VERY good) I had to keep reminding myself on Bale's character that "this is 'Batman'!!"

Then, to applaud the glorious AMY ADAMS, who never ceases to amaze me with her acting depth.
Golden Globe winner MELISSA LEO has been turning in such fierce and un-self-conscious performances for so many years, it is difficult to stop and realize she is totally astounding, because you just expect her to be excellent!

Finally, MARK WAHLBERG, who has come a long way from his "Marky Mark" days. He is now a successful TV and Movie Producer, and, along with his brother, Donnie, has carved a respectable niche for himself in the acting world too.

Here is your LAST CHANCE to see this movie before we finally let it go.
I hope you have heard by now this is NOT your typical "boxing film", but a heartfelt story with a lot of angst and soul. Based on a true story too!

RANTS, RAVINGS & RUMBLINGS FROM THE HEAD HONCHO...

INSIDER INFO: Those of you who have signed up for our latest Richland-at-the-Avon film class, BOGART MOVIES--PART 2, will get an announcement tonight at class that will soon be big news all over town. 
But, the enrollees get the news FIRST!

HINT: A VERY "Special Guest" is being booked for an appearance at the last Bogart class on March 3rd. This guest appearance will be open for ticket sales to the general public, and I think it WILL definitely SELL-OUT when it is announced!

However, all those registered in class will not only get to attend at no extra charge, they will be given priority seating!
It is not too late to sign-up for this class. Come see me personally and I will prorate the tuition because we are one class of 8 down.
But, don't wait too long!!

AND, just WHO is this "Special Guest"??
Our students will find out at tonight's class!!

So, what's going on with THE KING'S SPEECH ??
I can tell you right now, THE AVON will NOT be playing it.
I don't know of any scheduled showings very soon at the "other guys" locally either.

What I DO know is it is currently playing in Champaign, Springfield, Bloomington and Peoria.
So, if you think it is worth the drive...

I have seen it. It is a pleasant little film.
Is it the best film of the year? The be-all, end-all of cinema history?
Hardly.
(The studio's hype machine is working overtime to try and grab those awards!)

Video release is coming within 30-45 days too.
