THE TOWN (R)
One of my favorite film genres is the hard-edged crime thriller.
Not one of those "blow everything up" inanities like you see at the multiplexes of America constantly, but intelligent and moving quality films along the lines of "The Departed", or "Mystic River", or "The Usual Suspects" or, Michael Mann's gripping "Heat", to this very same director's masterful "Gone Baby Gone".
Most of those films I just mentioned have the same Boston setting.
Here is where the promise that BEN AFFLECK showed as a director in "Gone Baby Gone" (and guiding his brother to an Oscar nomination in that one to boot) pays off in spades!
This is not only directed by Affleck, but it also stars him, along with a great and distinguished cast!
JON HAMM, who is currently riding the crest of an Emmy-winning wave from the astounding TV series "Mad Men", and JEREMY RENNER, who was the "Best Actor" Oscar nominee for last year's "Best Picture" winner "The Hurt Locker", plus throw in Oscar winner CHRIS COOPER (one of my favorite actors) and foxy-but-real REBECCA HALL, along with a boat-load of others, and you have an excellent movie that has already garnered VERY POSITIVE REVIEWS!

With the release of THE TOWN, we kick off the Fall movie season! It already feels like we are in much better shape for movies than what was a pretty disappointing Summer movie season!

GET LOW (PG13)
ROBERT DUVALL, BILL MURRAY & SISSY SPACEK.
Engrave those three names in your cranium and realize this: GET LOW will be leaving the Avon soon, and you will be sooooo sorry you didn't get down to see it!
You've heard how great it is from your friends, and you've read the excellent reviews.
You also should know that THE AVON is the ONLY place you can see this in the Decatur/Mt. Zion/Forsyth/Clinton area!
We can't hold it any longer, and we are not just "marketing" by saying that either!
Next week we have TWO NEW ONES coming that will take this and "Winter's Bone'''s screen, so...GET A MOVE ON AND COME SEE "GET LOW" NOW!!!!!
GET LOW (PG13)
(Showtimes in brackets are $6.50 'Bargain Matinees")
FRI: (4:00) - 7:00
SAT: (1:00) - (4:00) - 7:00
SUN: (1:00) - (4:00)
MON thru THURS: 6:40

WINTER'S BONE (R)
And, if you read what I said about "Get Low" leaving next Thursday, you need to know it also applies to this incredible independent film as well!
For every ONE person who is not sure they liked this, there are TEN more who call it a masterpiece! That's pretty good odds in my book!
See newcomer JENNIFER LAWRENCE blow you off out of your seat with a performance that should get her a "Best Actress" Oscar nomination this year.
If you have found that "Get Low" is a hard movie to find playing in the area, you will discover that THE AVON HAS THE ONLY SHOWING OF "WINTER'S BONE" IN THE ENTIRE STATE OF ILLINOIS!!
These are tough times for the independent films, it seems the major studios are myopic about satisfying the "fan-boy" types with endless and moronic same ol', same ol', and audiences are voting with their wallets and demanding better movies!
Well, right here is one of the most original and textured films you're going to see for a while!
WINTER'S BONE (R)
(Showtimes in brackets are $6.50 'Bargain Matinees")
FRI: 7:15
SAT: (4:15) - 7:15
SUN:(4:15)
MON thru THURS: 6:30

FLIPPED (PG)
I got a little ticked last week when so few came to see this movie.
This wonderful film of first love steeped in 1960's nostalgia, is a "perfect" Avon movie!
The music is great, and the cast of AIDAN QUINN, JOHN MAHONEY, ANTHONY EDWARDS and more, is no slouch either.
How about the fact it is directed by ROB REINER??
I fear many of you are going to miss this, and then I will put it in my "Overlooked Films Classes" in a few years and tell how so few of you came to see it, and all of my students will be so incredulous that such a good movie sold so few tickets!!!
You can rectify that situation this weekend! You have THREE LAST CHANCES to see it!
FLIPPED (PG)

AMERICANA AT THE MOVIES---PART 4
(8 weeks of screening and discussion)
I really like the Americana series because it can be virtually anything!
You can see epics, dramas, comedies, musicals, action films; as long as they are "portraits of America" they can be shown for Americana class!
(But, as many of you already know: I NEVER tell you what you are going to see beforehand. You just gotta' trust me!)

We have class flyers with enrollment info in BOTH of our lobbies, or you can sign-up on that night of the first class.
There will be a Richland official there to get you started, and then you are in for the next 8 weeks of a wonderful world of screening and discussions!

I hope I see you for this class!
This is my TENTH YEAR doing these classes (who woulda thunk that?) and I think you will really enjoy them!
The Richland-at-the-Avon film classes are a Decatur institution now!
Sign up and see for yourself!

Come See Me This Weekend!
I'm Looking for You and You and...YOU!!
