CRAZY HEART (R)
And here we have nationally-known film critic Leonard Maltin again this week on his thoughts about CRAZY HEART, take it away, Leonard!!

Crazy Heart is the movie equivalent of comfort food; reassuring, familiar, and easy to digest. It's Jeff Bridges performance that makes it special.but then, he's reason enough to see almost any movie. (He's the best thing about the season's most disappointing movie, The Men Who Stare At Goats.) Here, he plays a weather-beaten country singer named Bad Blake who's written and sung a fair number of hits, but is now reduced to appearing at a bowling alley, while his protégé, Tommy Sweet (played, in a neat twist of casting, by Colin Farrell), is riding the gravy train. Blake is a mess; he drinks too much, and is careless in his behavior, but when he's interviewed by a local reporter (Maggie Gyllenhaal) he takes a genuine liking to her and pursues a relationship with her and her young son.
First-time writer-director Scott Cooper (who adapted Thomas Cobb's novel) flirts with cliché at every turn, but manages to keep his story and characters on track. And his actors, including Robert Duvall, who traveled this road in Tender Mercies some years ago, play everything simply and honestly. T Bone Burnett has written a handful of likable, listenable songs (with the late Stephen Bruton) that suit both Bad Blake and Jeff Bridges to a T. Crazy Heart may not be original, or memorable, but it's a pleasure to watch Jeff Bridges inhabit this character and make it his own.
Leonard Maltin (used with permission)

We are so grateful Fox/Searchlight recognized where best to place this important film is the Avon!
There are SOME studios out there who actually think about the theaters for a particular area; what will work best where!

AVATAR (PG13)

So, here is the 800 pound gorilla in the corner.
We decided there may be some of you who are curious about what all the fuss is about.
-And, there may be some of you who either:
1.) Don't like 3D, or get headaches from it.
2.) Don't want to pay the outrageous prices being charged for the 3D.
3.) Don't want to patronize any other theaters but the Avon (a feeling I share completely! :-) )
4.) Want to see it again, but don't care if its 3D or not.
5.) Know nothing about it, and have just come off a desert island for the past year.

This is an EXPERIMENT to see if it is even a viable alternative to show this film in a non-3D presentation.
Millions of people did NOT see it in 3D, so we are hopeful...but, it is for ONE-WEEK-ONLY!!

THE YOUNG VICTORIA (PG)

After this wonderful movie was nominated for 3 Oscars this week, we decided to hold it over for some last showings.
This will be IT, the very, very last times you can see it! We mean it! Really!
We have new ones coming next week, and there is no possible way we can hold it any longer!
THE YOUNG VICTORIA (PG)

SAT: (1:00) - 7:15
SUN: (1:00)

INVICTUS (PG13)
Wassamattau?
Does it take 2 Oscar nominations for MORGAN FREEMAN (Best Actor) and MATT DAMON (Best Supporting Actor) to get you to see this?
I think many do not even realize this is CLINT EASTWOOD'S new directorial movie!
In any event, we held this over just for the sheer hope that you will get thy rear in gear and see this before it's too late!!
INVICTUS (PG13)

What this should open everyone's eyes about is this: We played the 9-Oscar nominated THE HURT LOCKER last Summer.
We played it EXCLUSIVELY too!
And, you know what?
HARDLY ANYONE CAME!!

Those that did come see it, were stunned at its mastery, but, no matter how much I tried to push it in this very newsletter, I still could not drag you down here!
That's what ALL of you need to keep in mind...
We try very hard to not play "junk" at the Avon!
The "other" theaters who have a bazillion screens, have no choice but to fill those screens with some real, shall we say, dregs of the movie world...
BUT, we only have THREE screens, so we have to try and be brutally choosy in what we play.

And, yes, sometimes films that are below our standards do sneak past us, but more than not, you can trust these words:

IF IT PLAYS THE AVON, THERE IS SOMEWHAT OF A GUARANTEE IT IS QUALITY!

Now, THE HURT LOCKER is available currently on video, so the need to bring it back to our screens is rather futile.

We have a limited and non-3D run of AVATAR, just so you can see for yourself without the extra 3D cost (and the headaches 3D gives many people!)

I have even decided to hold-over the wonderful THE YOUNG VICTORIA, in light of the 3 Oscar nominations it received.

Additionally, we have held-over INVICTUS just so you have one last chance to see the 2 Oscar-nominated performances!

INVICTUS is another film that you have stayed away in droves for!
Why?
Is it the title?
Are you aware it is the new excellent new film from Director CLINT EASTWOOD?

Maybe those 2 major Oscar nominations will spark some interest in it?

This week we have the EXCLUSIVE run of the 3-Oscar nominated CRAZY HEART.
I am hoping this is finally the time JEFF BRIDGES receives his long-deserved Oscar!

I hope I see all of you this weekend!
I know the Super Bowl will command many of your attentions...
BUT...
I also know there are a whole lot more who couldn't care less about Super Bowl and would rather come to Avonia!

I'll Be Looking for you and you and YOU this weekend!

-Skip Huston
P.S. Our stalwart staff want me to remind all of you our showtimes only have about a 10 minute pre-show "cushion".

Every day we see people coming late because they have been "conditioned" by the "other guys" and their notorious 20-30 minutes of commercials!
WE DON'T DO THAT!!
We have a few previews and maybe a cartoon or short, and a 15 second spot for St. Mary's hospital, and we are off and running!

We HOPE you appreciate that about us.

We can always start showing 30 minutes of putrid and inane commercials like the "other guys" do!
OR... you can simply BE ON-TIME!
