THE PROPOSAL (PG13) Ready to laugh? I don't mean those smarmy little giggles that pass for "laughter" at some of those overrated raunchy comedies that are popular right now with the trendy set; I am talking about good belly-laughs from well-drawn characters and situations. SANDRA BULLOCK has been one of my faves since she first came on the screen 20 years ago (God, has it been that long?) and RYAN REYNOLDS is quickly making a great name for himself. Add Oscar-winner MARY STEENBURGEN, and not-too-often-seen CRAIG T. NELSON and then...90 year old BETTY WHITE!!!
What's not to like here?

THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123 (R) Someone turned his nose up last week when I mentioned he ought to see this movie, and sneered "It's a remake"---Well, in the first place, I am sure this person did not even see the 1974 original version, and in the 2nd place, as a bonafide college film teacher: This is an entirely different movie anyway! 
"Re-makes", per se'; have been a staple of Hollywood ever since, well...Hollywood! 
Granted, there have been some stinky and unnecessary remakes lately, BUT THIS AIN'T ONE OF THEM, FOLKS!
Two of our most charismatic actors, JOHN TRAVOLTA and DENZEL WASHINGTON, along with JAMES GANDOLFINI (Tony Soprano himself!) and JOHN TURTURRO bring you an updated and tough-as-nails crime thriller that you really need to see!

A NOTE FROM SKIP...
One of the topics in my film class this Thursday night will be how Hollywood neglects a huge portion of the movie-going public in favor of the 14 to 25 year olds. 
Some of the movies that cater to that crowd are sooooo dumb, they insult the intelligence of the average chipmunk!
At THE AVON, we are going to return to old and familiar territory in the next few months...
You will start to see more of those "Avon movies" that established us in the first place!
That's right; more movies aimed at grown-ups!
BUT, HERE'S THE DEAL:
When you see some of those art, indy and foreign films show up, you can't procrastinate or dally!!
You have to get right down within a week, because we may not play them for longer than that!
(AND, if those alternative films don't get enough attendance, we may not offer them again, period!)

SO, Yes, I have heard many of you loyal Avon fans in your desire to see more of the "Avon movies", like we used to play!!
I will be starting to bring some of those in very soon, and I hope you will support them!!

Look for some to come peppering in around August!!
