SHERLOCK HOLMES (PG13)
If I'm not mistaken here, I think that the character of Sherlock Holmes is one of the most portrayed fictional entities in the history of stage and screen. In this outing, we have no less that ROBERT DOWNEY, Jr. in the main role, with no less than JUDE LAW as the fabled Dr. Watson. Foxy RACHEL Mc ADAMS rounds out this period romp through jolly olde, and an exciting time is to be had by all! This even has a "Christmas" feel with it, as the settings and ambience remind one of Dickensian London!

IT'S COMPLICATED (R)
The media is filled with stories right now about how Hollywood neglects the more mature audiences and caters to the kids and fan-boys. Indeed, many of the older and more mature movie lovers have quit going to the movies because of the poor job many of the huge chain multiplex theaters do in keeping noise and disturbances to a minimum.
-And there is a good reason those big megalithic chains don't control their crowds better...
THEY DON'T CARE!
As long as the majority of movies are being aimed at a bunch of cell-phone talking and texting cretins, why should the chain theaters attempt to get their core audiences to actually show some class and behave themselves?

We all know that is NOT the case at the Avon!
Yes, sometimes some "problems" get past us, but it is such a rare occasion when compared to reports of such incidents on an HOURLY basis at the "other guys"; we feel confident in standing behind our record.

As such: Here is a movie that has THE AVON stamped all over it!
MERYL STREEP, STEVE MARTIN and ALEC BALDWIN in a comedy about divorce and those complications that arise at times when the ex-spouse is still in your life, and, well...
This is a movie that is aimed at the very audiences the media says is neglected these days, so get out and support it!
AND...SEE IT AT THE AVON!! (Unless you want to sit in an auditorium crammed with cell-phone and texting clowns, that is!)
IT'S COMPLICATED (R)
(Showtimes in brackets are $5.75 'Bargain Matinees")
FRI, SAT & SUN: (1:00) - (4:00) - 7:00
MON thru THURS: (4:00) - 7:00

THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG (G) Thank goodness Disney still recognizes the need to make classic animation too! It is a distinct possibility this form could become a lost art supplanted by computer-generated, 3D baloney that looks just like every other video game.

THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG is a throwback to those LITTLE MERMAID and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST days when there was real life behind the making, and not merely some strokes at a keyboard.

Are kids appreciating it? Hard to say right now. This is a film for the holidays, and the proof will not be clear for a couple weeks yet.
Are adults appreciating it? Absolutely!! Great New Orleans-type music too!

*4 Years in a Row? Yes, as far as I am concerned. We really did win #1 in 2008, 2007 and 2005.
In 2006 there were some "questionable" practices in the manner of balloting that caused a complete revamp of the online ballot acceptance procedure.
In short: There was CHICANERY afoot in a computer-programmed avalanche of identical ballots that gave one of the "other guys" the #1 spot at the very last few minutes before the polls closed. We then came in #2.
We KNOW this was cheating, and THEY know it was cheating, but what could the Herald & Review do but give them the position, and vow to make sure
deceptive and unfair tactics like they used never happened again!
We want to beat those scalawags fair and square, and, if we don't; we'll admit it with good sportsmanship.

In the case of the 2006 poll, we KNOW we actually did WIN #1, and we were even INFORMED of such, yet the official record will show it was one of the "other guys".
