TROPIC THUNDER (R) Ok, if this hysterical comedy were any wilder, it would probably be illegal! BEN STILLER, JACK BLACK & ROBERT DOWNEY, Jr. (as you have never seen him before, trust me) plus a whole bunch of their pals, including TOM CRUISE (definitely as you have never seen him before!) in a whacky, profane and gut-busting take on spoiled Hollywood actors and their devotion to their "craft". This is a "movie within a movie", and while it does stretch the "good taste" boundaries a bit, remember it most assuredly is rated "R' for a good reason!
TROPIC THUNDER (R)

Star Wars: THE CLONE WARS (PG13) George Lucas has much more to add in the Star Wars saga, and here is the latest installment. This is animated this time, and suitable for even the little kids too.

A NOTE FROM SKIP...
Thanks to all of you who sent in your "Top Ten Movie List" last week. It was really great to see how many of you have such diverse tastes, yet had an appetite for good movies too! In fact, I don't think anyone had a clinker on their list in the whole bunch!
Here is another fun exercise that someone suggested:

What is the "Soundtrack of Your Life?"
In other words: What music has influenced you most during your entire sojourn on Planet Earth?
I'll start first with mine:

Skip's Soundtrack of His Life:
(in no particular order)
1.) The epic movie scores of Miklos Rozsa (El Cid, Ben-Hur, Quo Vadis, etc.)
2.) Jackson Browne
3.) Dan Fogelberg (R.I.P.)
4.) The Beach Boys
5.) Selected films scores by Alex North, Jerry Goldsmith, Alfred Newman & John Williams.
6.) Poco
7.) The Eagles
8.) Linda Ronstadt
9.) Steely Dan
10.) And, of course, one of my favorite musician/songwriters: ME!

How About "Desert Island" CD's??:
"Court and Spark" by Joni Mitchell
Every album made to date by Jackson Browne
Diana Krall with me on a desert island with her piano and without her husband. :-)

My next film class for Richland, "Politics at the Movies" will start on September 11th...
I hate to keep beating this horse, but I need to stress again to all of you that the choice of films in this course will NOT be partisan or currently topical in any way, shape or form.
The selections will be classic movies about our American political ideals and values, and make up some of the finest movies ever made!
At my last class of the "Overlook Films" course that I do every Summer, I read a list of some 16 movies that are possibilities for the 8 movies in the class.
For the readers who were NOT there, here is the list that I MAY be choosing 8 films from:
THE BEST MAN--(1964) Henry Fonda-Cliff Robertson (VERY RARE!)
WAG THE DOG
CITY HALL
THE CONTENDER
ADVISE & CONSENT
POWER (Sydney Lumet "overlooked" film with Richard Gere, Gene Hackman & Julie Christie)
GABRIEL OVER THE WHITE HOUSE (1933 extremely rare film)
THE LAST HURRAH
PRIMARY COLORS
THE SEDUCTION OF JOE TYNAN (Alan Alda-Meryl Streep---very rare)
BOB ROBERTS
ALL THE KING'S MEN (original version)
A FACE IN THE CROWD
STATE OF THE UNION
THE CANDIDATE (Robert Redford)
MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON
So, how's that for a great list of fabulous films, huh?
You can get a flyer with the enrollment form at the Avon lobbies.
I hope to see all of you there!
The Richland-at-the-Avon film classes have been a great source of fun for the past 6 1/2 years now!

Come See Me This Weekend!
