THE BRAVE ONE (R) Fine actress and 2-time Oscar winner Jodi Foster doesn't do that many movies these days. She is a committed
artist who shuns the limelight and believes in being extremely choosy in the projects she appears in. At first glance, THE BRAVE ONE looks like a rehash of the old Charles Bronson "Death Wish" films done with a female slant, but this couldn't be further from the truth.
What THE BRAVE ONE portrays is an indictment of our violence-prone society in and of itself, and an examination of the "stranger" inside all of us who could turn cold-blooded killer if the situation was right. Deep stuff, indeed. This has received excellent reviews!
THE BRAVE ONE (R)

THE 3:10 TO YUMA (R) Just when I thought the Western movie was sadly obsolete, along comes a rip-roarin', straight-shootin'
"oater" that ranks with the best ever made! To all of the hundreds who thrilled to this at THE AVON last weekend, I say "thanks"!!
You saw an incredible entertainment on the biggest screen in the area! Russell Crowe and Christian Bale square off in an adventure that will have you wanting to saddle-up and join them on the dusty trail! An added plus, if you get there early enough, is the music that plays in the auditorium before the feature! It is great old western songs and TV and movie themes, and you can make a game out of guessing which one is which! All in all, a fine feature at Decatur's BEST movie theater!
THE 3:10 TO YUMA (R)

DEATH AT A FUNERAL (R) Ok, to use internet email vernacular: "OMG!!!" If you ever find anything more outrageously hilarious, let me know! Audiences were literally SCREAMING with laughter last weekend! Now, this is British humor, and it really doesn't care if you are offended or not. It is, absolutely "R-rated", but not for sexy stuff ('nuff said there). The English accents are very easy to understand, but there is not that much in the way of dialog either! In other words, this is not dry British drawing room humor!! It must leave on Wednesday, so you better get down this weekend!!!

AVON FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: Why don't you announce which theater a film will be playing in?

A: For one, we have been cautioned against designating screens because it tends to have a polarizing effect on which screen is better than the other. In our opinion, none of our screens are better than the other! The Avon Main is the biggest screen, that is true, but the Twins are the more comfortable theaters, and do not have small screens by any standard. Then, there is also the factor that we sometimes change screens mid-week for any number of reasons. In short, we do not designate screens because we don't want to be locked-in to that location decision.

Q: One of the unique things about The Avon is that all of the staff lines up and thanks everyone after every show. Is that something you have always done?

A: YES! It is called, in our internal parlance, the "greet-out", and it is an essential part of our operations! We want our patrons to feel like they are our honored guests, not like a herd of cattle! We hear so much about the "McTheaters" and how they act like they couldn't care if you are there or not...
At THE AVON, we not only care, we are 100% invested in you having a great time at the movies!

Q: I once saw Skip throw an entire group of young teenage ruffians out of the theater for creating a disturbance. I was impressed by that!
Is he the only one who cares that much, or is that a company policy that is followed by all?

A: There are so many movie lovers who have stopped going to the movies because of rude and rowdy behavior by others. I blame this entirely on the poor management in many of our nation's movie theaters. At The Avon, I have a zero-tolerance policy on disruptive antics! This includes the outrageous use of cell phones during a film for text-messaging, or, astoundingly enough, actual conversations! Many is the time I have told patrons to turn off their cell phones or get out! But, your question was: Is it only ME who does that?? Let me say this: If you encounter my wife, Susan, in the dark with her mag-lite flashlight in her hands, you will know it is NOT just ME who enforces this policy! All of our Operations Staff, Susan, Chris & Eddie, will not hesitate to deal with a rude and rowdy patron! But, we are not always in the auditorium, so, if someone disturbs you, COME AND TELL US!!

SUMMER IS FADING...
SUMMER IS FADING FAST-
-CAN'T MAKE A GOOD THING LAST
from "Summer is Fading" copyright 1974 by Skip Huston

Those words were the opening lyrics to a song I wrote and recorded with my band back when dinosaurs roamed the earth.
After all these years, they still haunt me about this time of year, when I can no longer deny the signs of approaching Fall...
The sunlight has a different pallor, somehow.
The pool is filling up with leaves.
The night air is crisp, and, even though the days can still be warm, we all know the end is near.

And, that means a change in our showtime policies from Summer hours to Fall/Winter, and a few other seasonal changes as well...
Probably by the end of October, we will stop the Sunday nighttime showings until April (unless it is a special circumstance), just like we have done every year for the past (almost) 9 years.
Additionally, our wildly-popular "Tightwad Tuesdays" will be suspended until the Spring, starting at the end of September!
So, that gives you just two more weeks of those $4.50 "Tightwad Tuesdays" until they are gone for awhile!

Come See Me This Weekend!!
It's GREAT weather for a MOVIE at THE AVON!!
